About Helen - Artist

After 28 years of living and working as an artist in the West Highlands, I can never take this special place for granted. I never tire of the play of light on mountains, sea and sky. Looking for the next painting is something that is always with me, it is always at the forefront of my mind. I am driven by the ideal that the next painting will be "the one" and that I will achieve the image that I have in my imagination.

I am excited to visit new places, but also love to return to favourite spots, like Sandaig, Ord and Knock Bay.

I take a selection of pastels, inks and my camera when I go out in search of inspiration. There's no better feeling than being out in the elements, chasing the light as it rushes across the landscape or sitting on an empty beach waiting patiently for the sun to return from behind the clouds.

Drawing outside requires speed and sometimes strength, when battling with a drawing board against the wind. It keeps the marks alive and fresh, not laboured. Sometimes these paintings will be framed or used to inform a more finished work back in my studio.

For the mixed media works, I use inks and watercolours applied freely, giving unpredictable results, I then draw into this with soft pastels once dry. The depth and richness of colour along with their spontinaeity make pastels my medium of choice.

I also use solely pastels on works done in my studio. I relish the challenge of conveying the reflective qualities of wet sand or the sunlight hitting the foam of a wave, with this dry medium.

My daughter has also featured in my work over the years, collecting shells or running along the waters edge , pastimes which I enjoyed as a child, these works reawaken nostalgic thoughts and feelings of memorable times.

Admirers of Helen's work have often commented on how the paintings make them feel transported to that place.

"You can take as many photos as you like, but the way Helen interprets the image in Pastel, adds an emotional depth."
